Hi all
I am using the Adobe Photography Plan. I extensively used LrC. Recently, after updating my OS to Win 11, LrC is running deathly slow. After launching, the catalogue becomes extremely unresponsive within 10 min. Even normal scrolling in the library module becomes a pain. Editing becomes a gargantuan task. It was not like this when I was using Win 10. I have checked the task manager, and I found that LrC hogs memory a lot. Even after shutting down, sometimes LrC keeps on running in the background, hogging a large chunk of memory.
I sometimes also get an error related to a missing file (not always), a screenshot of which is attached for your reference. Please note, I was getting this error even in Win 10.

My system specs are as follows:
1. Desktop
2. LrC and the catalogue are both on an internal SSD in the same partition (not C:\).
3. 64GB RAM 3200 MHz (16GBx4)
4. Win 11 (updated)
5. Avast Free AV (updated)
6. LrC updated to the latest version
7. Camera RAW updated to the latest version.
8. Catalogue optimised.
9. AMD Ryzen 5600X CPU

If any more information is required, please let me know.
Thank you.

error related to a missing file

Have you followed the fix instructions as shown in your attachent?

after shutting down, sometimes LrC keeps on running

How can something keep running if you shut down the computer. Maybe unplug it if you want to be sure.

There is a whole string of things to check..

First.. can you post a screen grab of the Catlog settings tab which shows the current location and size , etc of your catalog.
At the same time. Google Windows FastStart. Understand what it does and check if FastStart is active.

There is a whole bunch of stuff to check.. but these are the first two things I would explore.

Thank you for your replies.
1. Yes, I have tried the "Fix" instruction in the pop-up, but that didn't help.
2. Please find the catalogue settings screenshots enclosed.
3. Yes, FastStart is active. I deactivated it as I use an SSD.

Thank you again.

I had a high end custom built rig and was using a Sony a7riii 40MB as my main camera.

I noticed an immediate and dramatic drop of LrC performance when I upgraded my camera to a 60MB a7RV. It made LrC almost unusable.

I gained incremental improvements by removing my LrC catalog folder and image folders from both Windows Indexing and Windows Antivirus scans.

I regained an acceptable level of performance when I replaced my GPU with an Rtx4070 Ti 12 GB.

I subsequently went thru a period of horrendous LrC stability and performance issues. It coincided with an LrC ver upgrade, but I never forensically found the real cause. This stopped when I discovered that Windows FastStart had been reconfigured, (not by me.. I assume a Windows update).

I now make sure that I use a script to fully shut down my Pc, so that when it restarts, it is always a cold reboot. I am not worried about the boot time... FastStart was implemented by Microsoft when people used much slower spinning disks..

When it comes to performance ... it can be a long difficult road.

Two factors regularly impacting performance / stability of LrC.. a) using the option to auto save xmp data to disk and b) storing your Catlog folder under the influence of Windows OneDrive. The database nature of the LrC Catlog is not suitable for control by both Lightroom and OneDrive at the same time.

Thank you for your reply.
So what would you advise in my case?

Can you explain this to me? I do not use OneDrive. I personally consider this bloatware. Is there any way to check whether it is accessing the catalogue, and if it is, then how to stop that?

Your screen grabs above indicate that you are unlikely to be using OneDrive. It is not a subfolder of the normal OneDrive Folder, it is on a D Drive, so further removing it from OneDrive influence.. and you also backup your catalog to a diff drive.

The reason I do not say with 100% certainty is that it is possible to configure to include Windows folders which are outside of the OneDrive folder to be managed by OneDrive. You would likely remember if you did that.

OneDrive can be useful for certain scenarios.. but most people do not understand its default settings and behaviour. I use cloud synch services regularly, but only keep stuff in synch folders while I transfer between machines.. I never store any data within a cloud synch service.

The XMP save metadata setting can have a big impact on performance, and there are lots of opposing views on the benefits and disadvantages.

Let me know if I have clarified your query.

I ran IT for a number of very large global orgs.. and had global deals with various virus protection services... but at a certain point we abandoned all third party virus scanning tools, depending instead on the service built into the o/s. We would have multiple layers of security for servers and in many cases we virtualised deployment of client Windows to manage corporate clients in the most effective way.

I see you have Avast... have you evaluated its impact on your performance... is it active when building previews, handling imports, exports, is it scanning your catalog every time it is updated, etc..

Thank you for your reply.

One Drive manages local folders and syncs them with the Microsoft Cloud. If you catalog is in such a folder (Like Pictures) then One Drive will manage it
