Newcastle United failed to beat a side that finished 97 places below them in the English pyramid last season - but this could have been even worse for Eddie Howe.
Having lost Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali earlier in the summer, Howe could be on the brink of seeing Bruno Guimaraes join Arsenal.
However, he may have been grateful for small mercies at Gateshead as £23m signing Sean Steur from Ajax shone against the National League side and Lewis Hall helped force an equaliser.
The Magpies were 11 minutes away from what would have been an alarming defeat in front of over 7,000 fans.

On a day in which Kevin Keegan was honoured with a minute's silence, the poignant atmosphere was followed by a battling display by the Tynesiders.
Newcastle had 76% of the ball but struggled to convert after creating 12 attempts at goal, and the non-league side, led by Lee Cattermole, dug in.
United had a chance in the second minute when Sean Neave forced Adam Desbois into a save with an effort from the left-hand side of the penalty area before Joe Willock forced the home keeper into a follow up save with a second effort.
United won a free-kick on the edge of the dee seven minutes later but after plenty of conversation over who would take it, with Fabian Schar and Lewis Hall keen, Harvey Barnes whipped it wide of the target. The Magpies lined up with a 4-2-3-1 system with Dutch youngster Steur pulling the strings in midfield.
Neave got in again and got his finish pretty much right, but Desbois made a fingertip save to flick it away for a corner as the pressure began to build on the half-hour mark.
Moments later, Hall flashed an effort over from long range as the former Reading Academy stopper held firm, and Gateshead made it beyond the 33-minute mark at 0-0.
Things got even better for Gateshead as a Billy Chadwick free-kick, after a Fabian Schar foul on Ashley Boatswain, hit the wall before Luke Supyk followed up and slipped it under Nick Pope on 34 minutes.
It was a goal on the 20-year-old's debut, and the strike came against the run of play in what was the Tynesiders' only real clear-cut chance of the first half.
Newcastle could not react before the break and went in 1-0 down against the National League outfit at the interval.
Steur shone for Newcastle in both halves, and three minutes into the second period, he twisted and turned outside the box before sending an effort just over the top.
Two minutes later, Barnes drove down the left and slipped the ball across the face of the goal, but Neave could not connect at the back post.
Howe made his first change of the afternoon when Schar was taken off and replaced by youngster Miodrag Pivas. It was Schar's first outing since January, when he suffered a season-ending ankle injury.
Hall thought he'd won a penalty after the hour mark but protests were waved away as frustration began to creep in.
Newcastle brought on youngsters Mason Miley and Matheos Ferreira to freshen things up, while Ewen Jaouen was also handed a debut as he replaced Pope.
The Magpies had 20 minutes to avoid what would be a deeply disappointing result at the International Stadium. Jacob Murphy hit a tired shot on the turn, but again Desbois gathered comfortably to maintain Gateshead's slender lead.
Newcastle gave Trevan Sanusi and Seung-Soo Park a chance with 12 minutes left as the visitors searched for answers. With 11 minutes left Jacob Ramsey drifted a ball to the left wing with Hall firing in from an angle and Ben Williams putting it past his own goalkeeper.
Newcastle pushed hard in the latter stages but could not find a winner with Gateshead delighted with a 1-1 draw against Premier League opponents. This was a lucky escape for Newcastle in their first public friendly with more new signings clearly needed.
