The Magpies kicked off pre-season in front of their fans with a short trip across the Tyne to face Gateshead

Newcastle United were held by National League outfit Gateshead at the International Stadium as an own goal spared their blushes.

The Magpies slipped behind after a Billy Chadwick free-kick, conceded after a Fabian Schar foul on Ashley Boatswain, hit the wall before Luke Supyk followed up and slipped it under Nick Pope on 34 minutes.

But in the second half Newcastle, who dominated against the non-league side, were level after Jacob Ramsey lifted a ball to the left wing for Lewis Hall who fired home via a big deflection off Ben Williams.

Newcastle pushed on after the equaliser but could not find a way past Adam Desbois who was arguably the home side's man of the match.

Nick Pope 6

Beaten low down after slow reaction for Heed opener but otherwise did not have a great deal to do. Taken off mid-way through the second half.

Leo Shahar 6

Did not really grasp his chance in what was a massive opportunity for him with Tino Livramento injured. Replaced by Mason Miley before the end.

Fabian Schar 6

Appearing for the first time since January when he suffered a season ending ankle injury. Made seven defensive contributions but gave away the free-kick that led to Gateshead's goal.

Alex Murphy 6

Battled away and ended the game with the captain's armband but needs a long loan this season.

Lewis Hall 7

Was an attacking threat and forced home the equaliser via a big deflection.

Joe Willock 5

Not much impact with rumours of a move to Turkey still rife.

Sean Steur 9

The 18-year-old looks very good technically. Some fine passes and he did not look daunted on an impressive debut. Looked like a player who had been on the scene for years.

Jacob Ramsey 7

Made things happen in the second half and was the architect of the equaliser

Jacob Murphy 5

Looked to supply from the right, but nothing came off for him on a day in which he started the game as captain.

Harvey Barnes 6

Had his chances in the first half but could not beat Adam Desbois. Taken off in the latter stages.

Sean Neave 7

Denied twice by the keeper. Unable to connect to a Barnes cross at the start of the second half.
