We love a yummy hair shade (see vanilla cream blonde, mocha brunette and honey highlights). Now though? It's the turn of redheads since “cinnamon brown hair colour” is leading the search trends.

While we love redhead hair colour all year round, it really comes into its own in summer and autumn when the light literally hits different. Lit by sunshine and paired with a tan, cinnamon shades glow. Then, as the weather cools down, it brings the warmth we all crave.

What is burnt cinnamon hair colour?

The shade was brought to our attention by top celebrity hair stylist, Tracey Cunningham who counts Emma Stone, Jennifer Lopez, Khloe Kardashian and Lindsay Lohan among her clients. “I'm loving a soft, brown-based auburn — something with warmth but not fire-engine brightness,” she told Glamour. “Think a ‘burnt cinnamon’ rather than a bold copper,” she explained. The colour basically sees a brunette base elevated with a sheer, cinnamon gloss over the top.

“It's wearable, it grows out gracefully, and it still reads as ‘natural light’ on camera, which is always my north star. For anyone testing the waters, I love using Schwarzkopf Vibrance gloss to lay in that warmth without permanent commitment — it's demi, so it fades gently rather than growing out with a hard line,” Tracey explains.

Cinnamon brown hair is the latest in a stream of redhead shades to take the spotlight, as red hair, in general, gets the love it deserves. Tracey told us in our red hair colour guide “when I was growing up, redheads were not popular — now you see them everywhere. It's so special. It really has come full circle. Redheads used to feel like the odd one out — now it's the colour everyone's asking to become. I love that shift. It's proof that individuality is the real trend, not any one specific shade.”

But also, we're ready for a vibe shift. “I think it's a reaction to years of cool, icy blondes and brunettes,” explains Tracey. “People are craving warmth again — red feels rich, confident, and alive. It photographs beautifully and it's a way to stand out without going into fantasy-colour territory. It's also deeply personal — the right red can make someone's whole colouring glow in a way blonde or brunette just can't,” she says.

Plus, it's cosy. Cinnamon brown offers up a beautiful transitional shade for autumn if you want a warm, glossy, multi-dimensional look. "This colour is ideal for anyone who might want to switch their hair up for autumn and add some warmth, but not necessarily a full red. Cinnamon is the perfect in-between colour," notes Neil Maclean, Founder of Neil Maclean Hair Studio.

How to wear cinnamon brown hair?

The beauty of the shade is you can experiment with the colour pretty easily. “What I love most is that it's [not] a huge commitment — you can be a redhead just for the summer with a gloss, and wash it back out by fall. It's low-risk, high-reward,” says Tracey.

Equally, you can weave the tone into your hair more subtly. “What’s great about cinnamon balayage or adding copper tones into your hair, is that you can keep any light strands that you may have had from summer, blending cinnamon tones throughout the hair to add warmth and depth to your colour,” notes Neil.

How to upkeep cinnamon brown hair?

“Red is the most delicate colour family — it fades fastest," explains Tracey. She recommends coming in every 4-6 weeks for a gloss to refresh the tone. But, to maintain the colour at home, sulphate-free shampoos are gentler and less stripping on hair colour, colour-depositing masks can add vibrancy back in (just be careful of staining your surroundings) and a top tip to keep things glossy is to rinse with cold water. Turn the taps as far as you can bear to seal the hair cuticle after washing and lock in that colour and shine.

Here's eight of our favourite ways to wear it…
