ComEd says most power in Chicago area restored as thousands remain in the dark

Дата публикации: 29-07-2026 20:39:28

ComEd said more than half a million customers lost power across northern Illinois, and in the first 36 hours, crews restored power to more than 85% of them. However, there are still pockets all over the Chicago area where homes and businesses don’t have power.
Betsy Paquin had a front row seat as ComEd crews worked in her backyard Wednesday afternoon, trying to get the lights back on throughout her Evanston-Skokie neighborhood.
“No air conditioning, no coffee maker, no garbage disposal, sump pumps only if there’s backup batteries. There are some neighbors who have water in their basement,” Paquin said.
She’s also grateful to her friend who brought over a backup generator.
“At 10 o’clock last night, my husband’s in the dark setting up that and we’re going to the gas station to get the gas,” she said. “I think we saved what was in the freezer.”
Her neighbor Chuck Silverstein spent the night at his brother’s home because he sleeps with a CPAP machine.
“It’s been very stressful,” he said. “It’s almost impossible to work at home. I cant use my computer. I’m using my phone, which is not fun for me.”
He also added, “There’s a lot worse things going on, but it’s just challenging. You just have to be patient.”
ComEd said in a statement, “We know this is tough for people who are still waiting for service to be restored.” The company said Monday’s severe storms were the 16th major weather event affecting ComEd customers this year, the highest number in two decades. The company said the vast majority of people will have service restored by Friday evening.
In Skokie, the power outage forced a stretch of businesses along Dempster Street to close, including Grecian Kitchen.
“(We’re) cleaning what we can and trying to salvage whatever we can using our generator from our food truck, but there’s not much else we can do at the moment,” said co-owner Steve Eikosidekas.
It’s been discouraging to turn away customers and turn down catering orders.
“We feel bad for our staff, too. They’re trying to make a living as well as pay their rent,” Eikosidekas said. “We’ll get through it though.”
ComEd said the hardest-hit areas were in the south and north suburbs. Significant damage was also reported in communities north and west of Chicago.
ComEd customers can check on restoration estimates for their homes or businesses and track the status of repairs by visiting ComEd’s Outage Tracker at ComEd.com/OutageTracker.
