I'm trying to move my gaming to Linux for various reasons...
Regarding GTA, it seems to work fine mostly. But opening in-game Social Club the mouse cursor is not visible. Does anyone have a workaround for this? It's quite annoying to be honest.

Are you using the latest version of Proton or are you using something else to get it running?

If you're on Steam, just use the Steam Overlay to locate your cursor, exit it and move it until you finally hover over what you need.
If you're just using it to join friends, don't bother with it and use the ingame Friends submenu in the Pause Menu to join/invite friends or accept their invites. Works wonders.
You'll be able to see your friends just fine in here.
Edit 2: The bug with the cursor not being visible in the Social Club overlay in Linux has been present for at least 4 years, since that's how long I've been playing GTA on Linux. Probably something to do with the fact that if I recall correctly, the overlay is built on CEF, which Wine does not play too nice with.

Latest version, tried also the experimental version.
I guess I have to do the overlay/alt+tab trick to navigate mouse cursor to correct place. I mainly use social club for messaging or accepting session invites.
Hopefully one of these days this annoyance is fixed though

Yeah for messages there is no bypass but you can accept game invites through the in-game menu fortunately so you don't have to put up with it TOO much
What I usually do is a grab a smaller windows and Alt+Tab to it to help locate my cursor and position it. Still annoying but it works.

Another quick couple notes.
If you are using a "stable" release distro (Ubuntu/Debian based mostly) you could potentially get better performance if you use the flatpak version of steam/lutris due to it being able to use a newer version of Mesa compared to the system. I think AMD GPUs are effected more by this than NIVIDIA but I could be wrong.
If you are using KDE or GNOME which are on wayland you should have buttery smooth frames with no need to fiddle with things. If you are still on a DE using X11 (XFCE, MATE, Cinnamon) you will need to tweak some settings to be able to get buttery smooth frames which I could help you out with if needed.

I think the performance difference stems from the simple fact that GTA V is an NVIDIA optimized title, hence why AMD GPUs perform worse on it. Personally, I tried to run it on a GTX 660Ti and it almost ran better than my RX 560 that I used to have. But then again, the drivers restricted me to X11 (since the 660Ti is legacy, 470.xx branch), and it was suffering from a bug which some NVIDIA graphics cards have, causing the game to crash if you open the Graphics settings in Online, saying that you do not have a graphics card. But I think it's good advice to use Flatpak on "stable" distros, or just, in the case of Ubuntu, use this https://launchpad.net/~kisak/+archive/ubuntu/kisak-mesa for the most bleeding edge Mesa drivers (dunno what the equivalent would be on let's say, Fedora or something). Affects only Intel/AMD graphics cards though.
KDE Plasma 6 has this feature called "Shake Cursor" under Settings > Accessibility where upon shaking your mouse the cursor grows in size.
While game's full screen, activate SC with Home, alt-tab (game minimizes) and alt-tab again (game returns) and shake your mouse... Kinda janky way to get your mouse cursor but whatever works for you.

I'm using stock Ubuntu 24.04 so it is X11. Also with the official Valve .deb install.
The FPS is good in single player, but leaves a bit to desire in online (50-70). I've tried this and that to get it better without success, so if there's any hints, I'm interested to try. The FPS is nevertheless good enough as it is so I'm not gonna do anything crazy to try making it better

I think Ubuntu by default uses wayland so you shouldn't notice any weird frame timings/stutters. You should of installed it via your package manager and not the .deb from the website as having your package manager manage everything is the intended way. You could see if the flatpak version gives you any performance increase as it will be using a newer version of Mesa.
GTA isn't a well optimized game; Online is even worse. Only real way to get more FPS if nothing else works is to have a really good CPU as most modern GPUS aren't the issue.

Ubuntu starts using Wayland by default on 24.10. But I guess I could try with Wayland session manually if it works better.
Yeah you're right, maybe I should uninstall Steam and install it from package manager. Might be more reliable in the long run.

I'm using Mint (Cinnamon) on an older PC but it has an SSD at least. How good of a video card do you need decent frames?

I don't know. I have NVidia 3060 Ti now, but I'm quite sure much worse would do ok here. As others have mentioned here, a performant CPU is more important in GTA (Online).
Because AMD GPU's use the embedded open source Radeon drivers which are known to be more stable than NVIDIA's, it's possible performance could be a little better as even for emulation NVIDIA can be hit and miss on Linux. That said, especially because of the way Proton/Wine etc. works, a good CPU will be more important for GTA V and Online.
I've actually never tested GTAO on Linux specifically but I do imagine the performance that can already be dodgy on Windows can be dodgier on Linux. And then you have engines where things run better on Linux

I'm using a 5800X3d and 6800xt on Debian Sid using flatpak steam (Ive used native as well with no issues).
Since I've switched to Linux my experience in GTA has actually been smoother. It feelss like there are less random stutters (but not none).
I'm pretty sure I don't have any decrease is frame rate either. I may have even gained a small handful compared to my windows 10 install I could have to check.

You're not wrong. I tried benchmarking this about 3 years ago and Linux has increased, at least in my case, minimums by up to 10fps. Lost about 1-2FPS for the average though, so, barely noticeable at all.

Are you playing in public, very populated sessions? If I play solo, I get about 90-120FPS, but if I join a lobby with let's say, 25 other people, I drop down all the way to about 70-80.

Of course, as everyone has already mentioned, it moreso depends on the CPU. I'd say I wouldn't go below i5 3rd/4th gen for Intel, and I wouldn't go below the anemic AMD FX series, though that may perform like.. well, let's just say not great.
As for a graphics card, if you don't mind graphical detail, I wouldn't personally go older than the GTX 600 series, or in case of AMD, older than the R9 graphics cards. RX 400/500 preferable for some good budget gaming.
The worst hardware I was able to run GTA on Linux was an Intel Core i5-8350U with integrated graphics, and I got about 27fps in online at 1600x900 plugged into a wall.
For the worst desktop hardware I played on Linux with, I used to have an A8-9600 CPU with Radeon R7 integrated graphics. In all honesty, the CPU, being a rebranded FX CPU for AM4, was probably the weakest component. I ran it at like 1280x720 and it ran at about 40fps in online, sometimes stuttering so hard the textures disappeared.

In public lobbies, yes. I've noticed also that the amount of players in the session seem to affect the FPS quite a bit.
One grievance I encountered is this: as well known, this game has tendency to get stuck loading something (you're in the skies, stuck loading to get into your arcade, the heist is stuck "loading" or "initializing" etc etc). In Windows I just unplugged the network cable and in about 7-10 seconds game was like "Dammit, lost connection to servers" and let me out of the situation into single player. On Linux it doesn't care about lost connection. It just stays there. So I have to restart the full game. Has anyone found a better/faster way to get out of that situation on Linux?
For situations when you're stuck loading interiors or stuck in the clouds, the Windows solution was to suspend and resume the game process. In Linux it's similar, send the signals SIGSTOP and SIGCONT, stop and continue respectively, to said process. I'm no master bash script guru so if anyone has one better, this simple bash script will automate the steps:
#!/bin/bash
pkill -19 -x GTA5.exe
sleep 9
pkill -18 -x GTA5.exe
The first line sends the STOP signal to GTA5.exe, the second line waits 9 seconds and the third line sends the CONTINUE signal to GTA5.exe.
Save as "script.sh" or some memorable name, then "chmod +x script.sh" to make the script executable and run the script from the directory with "./script.sh"
Currently I'm running XFCE desktop environment and I have bound the Pause key to that script via Settings > Keyboard > Application Shortcuts.
As for getting stuck "loading" or "initializing," my go to method still works in Windows and Linux - open SC overlay and join a friends session or join a Crew or make another Crew as your Active Crew, and this action should kick you to Character Selection.

It's just fine sir. I personally use kill -STOP $(pidof GTA5.exe) and then kill -CONT $(pidof GTA5.exe), but your script works fine as well.
To extreme skeptics out there, this person's script is completely fine and WON'T hack your computer, or whatever concerns you may have (I know it's probably unnecessary in here, but I know that some people like that exist, even those kinds who are scared by "echo Hello".

It has been like this since forever. Every single DLC makes it SLIGHTLY worse, but not that much. It is especially apparent on Xbox One or PS4, where the framerate in full sessions is nearing unplayable values.
EDIT: And in the usual Rockstar fashion, since we, the PC users still didn't receive E&E, we still share the codebase with XB1/PS4. I didn't see the leaks though so we could even be potentially running on the archaic codebase of the PowerPC port (PS3/XB360) from 11 years ago that was ported to then next-gen consoles (I don't know if they did a rewrite or if they maintained two different codebases). Beats me.

If you alt-tab into the game and quickly press Home the mouse will actually appear apparently.

Oh yeah, nice... seems to work most of the time. When you alt-tab to the game, the normal mouse cursor is shown on the screen for half a second or something. If you press Home during that time the cursor seems to stay there (at least often, does not work all the time).
The weirdest thing about this bug is the fact in RDR2, the overlay for me works with the same version of Proton I use, I guess I'm going to contact GloriousEggroll if they're not applying different patches to both GTA V and RDR2 so that we could potentially get rid of this issue. Though I don't know if RDR2 uses a different version of the overlay than GTA V.

I don't use Proton-GE with RDR2, just the regular Proton 9.0, and also don't have the problem there. So don't seem to be any special patch.
RDR2 uses the same overlay as GTA V, however it's an entirely different DX12/Vulkan hook even on Windows so that might have to do with it.

Small additional detail: In RDR2 opening the social club layout has mouse cursor only when RDR2 is in screen where in-game mouse cursor is visible (for example if opened from pause screen). This works for me similarly with the normal Proton version and the GE version that I have.
It's almost two years and GTA Online still doesn't work in Linux. This is ridiculous.
How come the fcking modders get through BattlEye and no one has done similar hack so that we could play on Linux? That would be useful instead of this stupid modding sh*t.
