One person was shot during a fight inside a Walmart early Tuesday, authorities said, leading to a fatal police shooting in the parking lot of the business in the eastern Las Vegas Valley.

Metropolitan Police Department Capt. Brandon Oris said that at about 6 a.m. Tuesday police dispatchers received a report that “numerous subjects were involved in a physical altercation” inside a business in the 5100 block of Boulder Highway near Nellis Boulevard.

Oris did not name the business, but police had cordoned off the Walmart, which was closed and its employees evacuated.

“As an officer arrived, he heard what he believed to be a gunshot coming from inside the business immediately followed by a suspect exiting the business holding a firearm,” Oris said.

The officer fatally shot the gunman in the parking lot. Police later found a man inside the business with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to the hospital and is in critical condition.

The shooting was at least the third time gunfire erupted at a Las Vegas Valley retail store in about two months.

On May 12, two people were shot and killed at a Smith’s grocery store, 9750 S. Maryland Parkway.

Police said Amanda Frias Rosas and her husband, Victor Frias Rosas, were slain in the Smith’s by Amanda Frias Rosas’ former boyfriend, Alejandro Estrada, 43. Authorities have alleged that Estrada killed the couple amid his concerns that he was going to go to jail for unpaid child support.

On June 17, employee Brandan Lucas was shot and killed by 19-year-old David Vasquez inside a northwest valley Five Below, police said. Lucas was 31.

Metro said that the day prior, Vasquez and his girlfriend, who also worked at Five Below, argued over flirty text messages she had received from Lucas.

Outside the Walmart on Tuesday, two witnesses who declined to provide their names said they were inside the store when they heard shots ring out Tuesday before evacuating.

Dozens of Walmart employees were seen congregating in a parking area south of the store around 7:10 a.m. About 20 minutes later, more than half had left the area.

Steve Melchor is an employee of a nearby Dotty’s.

“About 6:10 a.m., me and a couple of patrons here noticed a lot of police activity,” he said. “Within 15 minutes they had police tape up, you could hear sirens coming constantly and paramedic units. By like 6:20 a.m. they were sectioning off, police taping the area and closing the entire Walmart parking lot.”

Walmart released a statement after the shooting.

”The safety of our associates and customers is a top priority. We’re grateful to first responders for their swift response and are working closely with law enforcement as they continue their investigation.”

Oris said police were still investigating how many people were involved in the initial fight inside the store.

Asked if the people involved in the fight knew each other, Oris said, “At this point we are not sure. We believe they had some sort of relationship or knew each other prior. It wasn’t random.”

The shooting is the eighth officer- involved shooting in Metro jurisdiction in 2026.
