The wild thing about relationships is that you sometimes don't realize how unhealthy or dysfunctional your past ones were until you get into a healthy one. Looking back, I know I've had a few relationships I genuinely believed were normal because they were all I'd ever known. Then I met my husband, and suddenly everything clicked. The comparison was so undeniable that it completely changed how I understood what a healthy relationship could look like.

And I know so many of my friends have similar stories. When you finally get into a healthy relationship, you are still kind of on guard. You are kind of always in a state of disbelief, waiting for the other shoe to drop. You think that it's too good to be true, that someone can't be genuinely this good to you and not have ulterior motives. You wait for this dramatic shift into reality...but it never comes.

Little by little, you stop assuming they'll hurt you. You start realizing they might actually keep treating you with the same kindness, patience, and respect they showed from the beginning. That they're not love bombing you, deceiving you, or pretending to be someone they're not. It's just...real. And it's wayyy better than you ever imagined it could be.

The moment you realize they're nothing like your ex and that you're in a healthy relationship can come in all kinds of ways. Maybe it's when you notice they always text or call when they say they will. And if something genuinely unexpected comes up, they don't leave you wondering. They explain what happened, apologize sincerely, and make it right. Instead of constantly questioning where you stand, you realize you can actually trust their words to match their actions.

Or maybe it's when you introduce them to your family and realize you don't feel embarrassed, anxious, or worried about how they'll act. Instead, there's this unexpected sense of peace. You don't spend the whole visit wondering what they'll say or if you'll have to smooth things over afterward. You just know your family will like them. In fact, you feel proud to show them off.

Or maybe it's when you realize they remember the little things. Your coffee order. Your favourite book. That funny story you told them about your childhood months ago. The details that most people would forget somehow stay with them. And every so often, they surprise you with a thoughtful gesture or a passing comment that reminds you they were listening all along. Not because they had to, but because they genuinely care about you.

Or maybe it's something you can't quite explain. It's just a feeling. You fall asleep more easily when they're beside you. Holding their hand feels effortless, like your fingers were always meant to fit together. Their scent brings you comfort. Being close to them simply feels...right. Whatever it is, there's a quiet certainty that settles in. You know you're safe. You know you're loved. And you know you've found something genuinely healthy.
