Hi everybody.

Just tried my first eGPU installation a week ago.

I plugged the TH3P4G3 on my miniNUC Thunderbolt port, using the first "PD" USB port of the dock. Everything is fine : AMD recognize the GPU using AMD xConncet. All is cool, hurrah.

BUT If I launch a "heavy" game, Windows crash after a few seconds (tried on Assetto Corsa for ex. or Star Wars Squadrons)

What I tested : everything in this guide :

https://egpu.io/forums/pc-setup/guide-generic-windows-10-solutions-for-egpu-bsod-crashing-and-system-freezing-link-state-power-management-tdrdelay-tdrddidelay-nvidia-power-management-settings/

Notably :

  • USB power management : Link State Power Management
  • tdr and TdrDdiDelay
  • changing the USB cable (short cable : 30 cm)
  • Change PSU for the card. i used 2 different 650W PSU

Some comments :

  • Windows does not detect the dock if I use the 2nd port (the not "PD" one)
  • The GPU Watt consumption never exceed 150W
  • I have a lot of WHEA-LOGGER event in Windows event ("Advanced Error Reporting (PCI Express)")
  • Thunderbolt Command Center does not "see" the dock at all - I assumed it was because AMD xConnect was doing the job...

It's really frustrating ! 😢

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance !!!

@gazzulgpu, the only 2 things that come to my mind are these:

  • Connect your eGPU to another laptop and see how it behaves then. This way at least you will know whether the problem is more on the eGPU side or on the NUC side...
  • Boot your machine using some Linux live bootable USB stick to see if it's more of a hardware or a software issue.

@morgwai, Thanks for the reply !

Progress on my side. and anybody interested by WHEA errors : desactivating the PCIE Ethernet card (realtek) solved the Event spamming issue. Good news !

It was deactivating Windows control of the PCI configuration that stopped the error (bcdedit /set {current} pciexpress forcedisable) but if I revert to default, it's back. I suspect it's a symptom of the problem...

But the crash persist (argh!). Even if I lower power on my card (with MSi afterburner) after sometimes it crashes.

And the dock is still not recognized on the second port (not PD one). I suspect a Driver issue or authorization issue.

good idea to test on another PC. Will try tomorrow. i have to find another one haha.

Right now I'm trying to find a way to analyse crash logs. i'm sure AMD drop some somewhere...

it's a downstream port...

@morgwai, Ok so it's normal that's it's not detected and the GPU does not light up ?
I tested on my work computer. I see the GPU flaring up. But i cannot install anything to test so too bad.

i reinstalled all AMD drivers (DDU in safe mode, etc...) same thing.
No errors logs anywhere.
I'm getting crazy here ...
I'm not an expert in LINUX but maybe I will do a fresh Windows install or test a Linux on USB key...

correct, it's for connecting USB-C peripherals or even daisy-chaining a 2nd eGPU.

@morgwai, thanks a lot !

Any tips for a good Linux distro, easy to use (I have not used Linux for 10 years now) to debug Thunderbolt issue ? A fedora maybe ?

I will load that on a USB key sometimes this week.

@gazzulgpu, you need to test heavy gaming, so it generally should be a distro that makes it easy to install for example Steam. This I believe should generally include most distros, but I'm not much of a gamer, so I don't know the details. Once you have Linux+Steam running, try some titles that support Linux natively to avoid any emulation issues (a quick search showed for example CS2 or DOTA2).

@gazzulgpu, Bazzite or CachyOS are popular distros for linux gaming these days. Bazzite is based on Fedora and CachyOS is based on Arch if that matters. Both use Wayland desktops by default so if you want to test the GPU at maximum performance I'd recommend also installing the all-ways-eGPU script. That is used to set the eGPU as primary which should allow the GPU to give maximum performance. I like the Gravitymark benchmark as a native linux GPU test because it supports vulkan and also has a ray-tracing option.

@nu_ninja, @morgwai Thanks  !

i did try Fedora using a Live USB key. I used a old benchmark tool I know : benchmark.unigine.com. Great stuff as it works in Windows and Linux.

It crashed in Windows and on Linux !

So the obvious answer is that the TH3P4G dock is faulty or my GPU is faulty ...

Or my PC and his bios are not compatible but it would seem strange...

I'm getting crazy here Smile
