So. Here we are again.
As it turned out, the rejection of the previous version of this landed right as I was having a big inspiration strike to hit the studio - so thank you, in a way, although the 7 hours I spent messing with the song based on your feedback will probably judge me harshly later.
But really, thank you. As noted by jnWake, this IS a very important track to me - and your feedback matters a lot. Seeing it get a 'hey, pick the production up' was actually really inspiring, so I went and did exactly that. I also appreciate how hard it is to judge something that has that weight on it so - sorry for dropping that on you!
As before, this track was conceived shortly after one of my brothers passed suddenly in 2025. It happens to be the anniversary of this track being made in a couple of weeks so it's all very top of mind, great for going over it again. Obviously I don't expect this to make it through judging in time for that particular anniversary, heh.
The intention of this song is to bring the terrifying grind of the machine to life - a relentless assault, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Opening with waves crashing, and what could be the song of friends in the distance to find, the machine springs to life and begins grinding away at your soul. With few respites, this psytrance interpretation moves fast, like the level it's based off. But when we hit the mid section, we find our friends and begin our triumphant escape from the hateful grind!
Look I could write poetry all night about this thing, I love the original of this song, I love the level and this is important enough to me that I apparently needed to stay up till 4am to punch the update out while inspiration was hot.
Sounds we bring to the table with this song:
- Yamaha TG11 Tone Generator - Waves, Kalimba, Brass Section, AahChoir and Church Organ
- Roland Piano - Piano tones
- Reason 13 - Thor and Europa synthesisers, drums, bassline, additional effects
Addressing judges' commentary from the last submission:
- Breaking the flat grind was important, so there's now a rest point at 1:12 where the cello eases off and lets the melody re-enter while the waves crash.
- I've reduced the sausage-ness of this one significantly, hopefully no more exhausting listening sessions!
- Please enjoy the stereo field, the cello spends a lot of time wandering around it, closing the space in and opening up - definitely best listened to on good monitors or headphones.
- Added significantly more variety to the beats and patterns to help flag oncoming phrase changes - this is something a few people have commented on as a weakness of mine so hopefully this has got some better movement in it.
- YES I got rid of the brass section ok I get it it was awful and I have to agree. It has been replaced with... a church organ. And a choir. aaaand some more brass. (all from my brother's Yamaha TG11 Tone Gen, I like the 1991 vibes off it)
- In some ways I made the back end of the mix even MORE cluttered now, but hopefully with enough stereo separation and interest in changing dynamics to prevent it feeling LOUD, I want it to feel a bit oppressive so the break out at the end of the song is a bit more meaningful, but not be actually awful to listen to.
- Also brought the general background effects up a ton, and sidechained a bunch of stuff against other stuff to help things poke through better. I work in Reason and it's only in the last few months I've got my head around some of the multi channel mixing tools.
- Lastly, cut the last 8 bars off it. It ends with everything on that final cracked chime. Which is fitting, really.
