SUFFOLK, Va. — A set of numbers based on his children’s birthdays delivered a $100,000 Virginia Lottery prize after a Suffolk man added the Power Play option to his Powerball ticket.
According to the Virginia Lottery, the winning ticket was purchased for the July 15 Powerball drawing at the Wawa located at 1510 Holland Road in Suffolk.
The player matched four of the first five numbers and the Powerball, a combination normally worth $50,000. Because he added the $1 Power Play option when purchasing the ticket, his prize doubled to $100,000.
“I was in disbelief!” the winner told Lottery officials, adding that he asked his wife to verify the numbers because he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
The winning numbers drawn on July 15 were 2, 7, 18, 29 and 38, with Powerball 16.
The winner selected his own numbers using his children’s birthdays.
Powerball drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m.
The odds of matching all six numbers to win the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million, while the overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 25.
