Just moments after the New York Knicks captured their first NBA championship in more than 50 years, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that a ticker-tape parade would be held in their honor, predicting Monday that it could become "the largest parade in our city's history.”

The mayor heralded the celebration with a succinct message on social media after Saturday night’s victory: “Parade. Thursday. Manhattan.”

Calling into “Mornings On 1” Monday morning, Mamdani said the city wanted to move quickly, as fans immediately began asking when the parade would take place.

What You Need To Know Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Monday predicted the Knicks' upcoming ticker-tape parade could become "the largest parade in our city's history"
The parade will begin at 10 a.m. near Battery Park, traveling north along Broadway through the "Canyon of Heroes" before ending at City Hall
It will be the first ticker-tape parade in franchise history, despite the Knicks' previous championships in 1970 and 1973
The mayor said the NYPD is preparing for large crowds and focused on ensuring a safe celebration after isolated incidents of mayhem following Saturday night's win

“As soon as the game finished, my phone started to ring, of when it was going to be, and we thought it best to let everyone know,” he said. “We're very excited for it. It’s been 53 years of waiting.”

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. near Battery Park, traveling north along Broadway through the "Canyon of Heroes" before ending at City Hall, where players and city leaders will participate in a ceremony.

According to the mayor, it will be the first ticker-tape parade in franchise history, despite the Knicks' previous championships in 1970 and 1973.

While the event will follow the blueprint of past ticker-tape parades, Mamdani said the city's decades-long wait for a title could draw massive crowds.

“This is an incredible team that has brought the city together in a way that we often only see in moments of tragedy, but in a moment of joy this time,” Mamdani said.

“This is a moment so many have been waiting for, and I think we may very well see the largest parade in our city's history,” he added.

Mamdani said city officials coordinated with the Knicks to choose the parade date.

“As a fan, you never want to jinx something, but as a mayor, you have to plan in advance of anything,” he said. “In the event of Game 5, Thursday was the best date, given everything.”

“One of the key things we wanted to make sure was that players and their families could be here,” he added. “So I know there were some who may have wanted a quicker turnaround, but we had to make sure that everyone could bring everyone that meant something to them from the team to the parade itself."

While acknowledging that some students may be unable to attend because of this week’s Regents exams, the mayor said school should come first.

“My encouragement would be that you should still be taking the Regents,” he said. “Unlike the executive order for bedtime, this is something I cannot repeal.”

The mayor said the NYPD is preparing for large crowds and focused on ensuring a safe celebration after isolated incidents of mayhem following Saturday night's win.

“While the vast majority of New Yorkers celebrated responsibly… there were a select few who acted in a way that does not represent who we are as a city,” Mamdani said.

“It is frankly unacceptable when we see violence, whether it's directed at those around them or at police officers,” he added. “And I am hopeful of both the planning and the preparation that we have put in place for Thursday.”
