More than 80 Summit 11 students travelled to Sweden for this year’s PES canoeing expedition on Lake Stora Le. The trip combined adventure, teamwork and outdoor learning, with students building new skills while exploring the Swedish wilderness.

Organised by the Perse Exploration Society (PES), this year’s canoeing expedition saw students from Summit 11 take on an unforgettable adventure across Lake Stora Le in Sweden.

Over the course of the trip, students paddled through the lake’s many islands, camping on remote shores and working together as they travelled. As the expedition progressed, they took on more responsibility for camp life, from cooking meals over open fires to setting up camp each evening.

The weather kept everyone on their toes, with students experiencing everything from warm sunshine to heavy rain. Whatever the conditions, they approached each day with enthusiasm, showing resilience, teamwork and a willingness to get stuck in.

There was plenty to do when the canoes were out of the water too. Students immersed themselves in a range of activities, including fire-lighting by friction, fishing and wood carving. They also enjoyed baking and carving their own wooden spoons, learning new practical skills while gaining a deeper appreciation of life outdoors.

The expedition offered a cultural dimension too, with visits to local museums and a moose ranch providing insights into Swedish history, heritage and wildlife.

To round off the experience, students gathered for a traditional Swedish feast prepared using locally sourced produce, celebrating their achievements and reflecting on the many memories made during the trip.

Ben Parker, Director of Outdoor Education, said: “It was fantastic to see so many students embrace every aspect of the expedition. Whether paddling across the lake, setting up camp, learning new skills or dealing with the changing weather, they showed tremendous maturity, teamwork and enthusiasm throughout.”
