A young cricketer and Perse pupil, barely into his second season, has done something most players never manage in a lifetime: taken a wicket with every ball of an over.
Rohan, who plays for the under 9s at Great Shelford Cricket Club bowled out the batsmen to take six wickets, in six consecutive deliveries in one over, during a match against Histon on Sunday.
His side went on to win by 26 runs, and Rohan was named player of the match with bowling figures of 6 for 0.
“It rarely ever happens,” Rohan told the BBC. He’s been playing for the club since he was around seven and also turns out for his School team at The Perse.
The feat, sometimes called a double hat-trick or a “perfect over,” is exceptionally rare. It has been recorded only a handful of times in local cricket and has never been achieved at professional level. Rohan is now understood to be the youngest player ever to do it – the previous youngest was 12.
His dad, Narain, watching on Father’s Day, said:
“I was an exceptionally proud father to witness Rohan’s astonishing achievement. Like everyone watching, I was truly amazed to see him take six wickets in six consecutive balls in one over. It was really nice to see his unique accomplishment celebrated by both sets of spectators, who were truly shocked at what they had witnessed. The fact that it happened on Father’s Day made it even more special.”
Team coach and umpire Vishal Gupta told the BBC that he had the best seat in the house, and celebrated by taking off his umpire’s hat and lifting Rohan into the air with his team-mates. Head coach Lucas Green added the opposing team were as pleased as Rohan’s own side once the sixth wicket fell.
Cricket historian Andrew Radd, also speaking to the BBC, noted that records at grassroots level are patchy, but the Association of Cricket Statisticians has one confirmed instance of six wickets in six balls dating back to 1951. At first-class level, the closest anyone has come recently is five wickets in five balls, achieved in New Zealand earlier this year.
Congratulations to Rohan on his incredible achievement, and we are looking forward to following his journey in the sport.
