Nicolas Cage's run as an action movie star in the late '90s remains one of the most explosive and delightfully unhinged eras in Hollywood history. He teams up with the only federal prisoner to ever escape Alcatraz Island, John Patrick Mason, played by former James Bond star Sean Connery, after a group of renegade US Marines seize the infamous fortress and threaten the city with deadly nerve gas.

Hummel (Ed Harris) from launching chemical weapons on Alcatraz Island into San Francisco. After their SEAL team is wiped out, Stanley and John deal with the soldiers on their own."
The Rock caught the attention of action movie fans worldwide, raking in an impressive $335 million at the global box office against a reported production budget of $75 million, cementing itself as the fourth highest-grossing film of the year. Critics also widely embraced the high-velocity extravaganza, with the movie earning a 76% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (along with an 85% audience score). Twentieth Century Studios is reportedly preparing to give The Rock a premium upgrade in celebration of the movie's 30th anniversary. According to Blu-ray.com, the new combo pack release (4K and Blu-ray) is expected to hit shelves before the end of year in order to capitalize on the film hitting a fresh milestone year. It will feature a pristine 4K remaster, complete with High Dynamic Range (HDR) optimization to deliver unparalleled picture clarity for the pulse-pounding Alcatraz action sequences, offering genre fans and physical media collectors alike the definitive version of the popcorn classic to watch at home again and again.
The announcement comes amid a massive physical media renaissance for Cage, spearheaded by a wave of high-definition format upgrades for his most iconic films. Alongside the highly anticipated 4K restoration of The Rock, the actor's intense 2002 World War II drama, Windtalkers, also received a fresh 4K Blu-ray release this year.
