Sylvester Stallone built his legendary career on high-octane action blockbusters, many of which became staples of the genre. Through these movies, he brought to the screen some of cinema's most enduring icons, from the ultimate underdog boxer, Rocky Balboa, to the troubled Vietnam veteran, John Rambo. He also showcased his remarkable talent for explosive spectacles, starring in the likes of Demolition Man, Cliffhanger, and the Expendables series. However, his extensive filmography holds some hugely underrated treasures, including a 1996 disaster epic that remains one of the most gripping and suspenseful, yet frequently overlooked, triumphs in the actor's decades-long evolution as a true cinematic powerhouse.

While the world knew him as an unstoppable force, Daylight proved that Stallone could command an action movie using raw, human vulnerability rather than just firepower. He anchored the claustrophobic thriller playing Kit Latura, a disgraced former New York City Emergency Medical Services (EMS) chief, who comes to the rescue of a group of commuters trapped inside a collapsed tunnel after a massive explosion. Instead of battling rogue mercenaries or hardened criminals, Stallone fights rising water, toxic fumes, and crumbling concrete, as he desperately tries to make his way back to daylight before the tomb seals them in forever.

"A group of armed robbers fleeing the police head for the New Jersey Tunnel and run right into trucks transporting toxic waste. The spectacular explosion that follows results in both ends of the tunnel collapsing and the handful of people who survived the explosion are now in peril. Kit Latura is the only man with the skill and knowledge to lead the band of survivors out of the tunnel before the structure collapses."

Stallone's massive global appeal ultimately rescued Daylight from being a total financial disaster, but only just. Produced on a mega budget of $80 million, the film drastically underperformed in North America, stalling at $33 million. However, it pulled in an impressive $126.2 million from international markets to secure a box office haul of $159.2 million worldwide. Critics were similarly split, with some praising the movie's special effects and tense action sequences, while others heavily criticized its formulaic plot and flat character depth. The majority seemed to agree that it failed to bring anything truly innovative to the genre, awarding it a measly 28% score on Rotten Tomatoes (alongside a marginally better 37% approval rating from audiences).

Despite its initial reception, Daylight eventually found a dedicated cult fanbase through home video releases, television airings, and the rise of streaming platforms. Movie enthusiasts grew to appreciate the film as a peak example of '90s, high-concept filmmaking, finding merit in Stallone's more grounded performance compared to his usual action hero personas. The movie's newfound following has further cemented its legacy as an underrated gem in Stallone's acting portfolio, one that demands a second look, and boutique label Kino Lorber is ensuring it receives the premium treatment it deserves by giving it a new release.

Daylight is officially coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on Aug. 18, 2026, as a second pressing to satisfy demand for the action gem. Sourced from a pristine scan of the original 35mm camera negative, the physical media upgrade features High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Dolby Vision color grading, enhancing the chaotic disaster zone's fire, water, and shadow effects.
