“Prevailing wage” rates must be paid for work performed on public works projects in Illinois. Linked here are the new rates for work performed on or after July 15, 2026 for each county. They apply to to all public works project of any unit of Illinois government.

Please note that the “Pension” column is intended as the per-hour equivalent of a public pension. That amount, plus any other fringe benefits shown, must be paid in addition to the “Base” hourly rate. Calculation of prevailing wage, under Illinois law, is based on typical public works projects in the subject county, not private sector projects.

In the past, we’ve heard many complaints about how these rates are calculated and excessive burden the rates impose on local governments. We’d like to hear from you again, regardless of your view. Whether you work for the public or private sector and have any view you would like to share, please do so in the comment section below.

Wages and rates are what they are when the unions are present. Unions have their place and can serve a purpose. Not all union related rates or work is over priced and under performed, but an example of this is troubling union work at McCormick Place. During a trade show the unions are required to assemble the vendor booths, deliver them from the loading dock (no matter how small) and are required to plug in small lights for those booths into the power strips provided for each booth. The booth workers are not allowed to touch power cords. I can… Read more »

Electricians got a 10% raise over July 2025 rates.

The rate to cover just the pensions/healthcare/vacation benefits for operating engineers tops $50/hr. In other words, to pay just the benefits for an operating engineer tops the median state income. That’s crazy.

Join a union if you want strong benefits and pay. Complain about unions and lick corporate boots if you want to complain about union members negotiating for better pay and benefits. Your choice.

Or because its mandatory, join the union, and then legally opt out of it. What thousands of people are doing throughout the USA. This so you don’t have to support your parasite union “officials” and end the payoffs into the democrat party slush fund.

Or just buy a card from one of many, including the Carpenters Union, that simply sell them.

I was recently downtown in The Loop and could not help but notice that so many stores were closed forever, and that so many restaurants catered to a certain ethnic demographic. Somebody should write an article about this change.

IL is a big government state – everything viewed as a jobs program with patronage possibilities and kickbacks. Now you know why simple government projects take forever to complete and are expensive.

Those seem like high numbers. Good work if you can get it.

What’s stopping you or anyone else? If you want low wages move to a redneck state that love to exploit their workers.

Classy response. Nothing is stopping people. that is why IL is shrinking – high and regressive tax burden, high regulation, high daily cost of living. People are leaving IL and taking their taxes with them.

You know something is way off with IL when the illegals who came here looking for scab work leave.

Frankly, I don’t think the rates are unreasonable. I think the primary issue is that the rates don’t come with the same controls/incentives as private companies. The rate is fair, but the productivity expectation is out of line with similar private roles.

I spent 10 years on a school board. At first, I voted against the annual Prevailing Wage resolution. But that accomplished nothing. Then I recommended that our Board create its own Prevailing Wage rates by surveying local companies for the specific roles where we anticipated our future capital project needs would be. As you can imagine, the Administration was very much against that idea because they would be tasked with implementing that project. Plus, it wasn’t their tax dollars being overspent on inflated wages. Finally, I suggested that for all of our CapEx bids requiring the use of Prevailing Wage,… Read more »

Thank you for trying. We hear calls that sensible/ conservative/ Republican citizens should not concede the public space to Democrat/ DSA powers, and should engage by running for office and participating in boards. You did that, so good for you. Seriously, thank you. But we see how frustrating it is trying to advocate for sensible policies in a place like Illinois.

Being on a school board must have been a trying experience. Do you feel that you made any accomplishments while you were there?

The original intent of the Davis Bacon wage rates was to provide the sometimes seasonal worker with adequate income over the course of the year since construction work could be an iffy proposition depending on the weather and the economy. The issue is that these high hourly rates are also applied to people with full-time positions in government service where there is no or little seasonality and the benefits are often-times better than the union trust fund benefits, including the pension. The laborer at $53 per hour plus fringes, holidays, vacations, sick time has yearly earning of over $100K, excellent… Read more »

That document should not exist. We should have such prosperity that employers would be willing to pay high rates to their good workers. This way, everyone with some skills and willing to work would have no difficulties with finding a well-paid job. The sad part is that we had that kind of system, and it made America great the first time around.

Hi Mark, I was on a Fire District board for 14 years. I voted against the prevailing rate resolution every year as a public protest. The law is burden on common sense-small projects that can be handled by using local, small contractors, could not be approved. I felt it was against my fiduciary duty, that I swore to, to require the District to hire prevailing rate contractors for every job!

Everyone crabs about the unreasonable property taxes and high cost of living here. This prevailing wage policy just demonstrates how the huge tax burden we endure are caused by government mandate. It is sad to see that most democrat voters do not have the ability to connect the dots that their politicians are driving these costs significantly higher and creating a no growth situation. Public schools here have completed failed on developing critical thinking skills.

No, it’s just so few of the people registered to vote, actually do so. And out the majority of the people who do, they and their families have a “personal” interest in watching the corruption continue. In Illinois, you’re either part of the scam or getting scammed.

Pensions derived from contributions should not be based on a rep!a cement of salary. Rather, A retiring worker should get an account balance consisting of contributions + earnings, if any. If workers want defined benefit they should buy annuities on a salary reduction basis. Government liability should be conditionally limited.
