destinationtoast:ALTResharing my fansplaining article on the weekend with a couple of the most interesting graphs I generated for the article! I remain flabbergasted by how many of the top ships from 2013 (shown in red above) are still the top ships in 2026. And it’s not that they got huge and then completely stagnated; over 7K Destiel works, or ~6% of that ship, updated within the past year, even though the show ended in 2020. Also updated in the last year: over 10K Drarry works (12% of the ship); 2.6K Sterek works (3% of the ship); 3.4K Johnlock works (4% of the ship). There are plenty of ships with new canon growing faster, but all those old juggernauts are all still generating thousands of new/updated works per year, even if they are well past their heydays. And remember, even though such stats focus a lot on the biggest ships/fandoms/etc., the vast majority of fandoms on AO3 (and therefore the vast majority of ships) are much smaller than any of the above ships and are not generating anywhere close to thousands of works per year:ALTI also really enjoy looking at which tropes/tags are currently popular on the archive – especially when I compare the common freeform tags with the most works vs. those with the most average kudos:ALTI speculate some about why these sets are so different in the article. I also share more graphs about the changes on the archive over the time I’ve been doing fandom stats. There’s a free gift link available during the first week!

Side by side bar charts comparing "Biggest relationships in 2013" with "Biggest relationships in 2026" as measured by Number of AO3 fanworks. Sherlock/John tops the 2013 list (with 21K works) and Castiel/Dean Winchester tops the 2026 list (with 128K works, far outpacing the next entry, Draco/Harry, with 87K works)ALT

I remain flabbergasted by how many of the top ships from 2013 (shown in red above) are still the top ships in 2026. And it's not that they got huge and then completely stagnated; over 7K Destiel works, or ~6% of that ship, updated within the past year, even though the show ended in 2020.

And remember, even though such stats focus a lot on the biggest ships/fandoms/etc., the vast majority of fandoms on AO3 (and therefore the vast majority of ships) are much smaller than any of the above ships and are not generating anywhere close to thousands of works per year:

Bar chart titled "Size of fandoms on AO3" with the Y axis labeled "Percent of AO3 fandoms (total=76K)" and the X axis is "Number of fanworks." 56% of fandoms have 1-10 works; 17% of fandoms have 11-100 works, 7% of fandoms have 101-1K works, 20% of fandoms have 1K-10K works, .5% of fandoms have 10K-100K works, and .06% of fandoms have more than 100K works.ALT

I also really enjoy looking at which tropes/tags are currently popular on the archive -- especially when I compare the common freeform tags with the most works vs. those with the most average kudos:

Two word clouds: On one side, "Most common freeform tags" with words in blue, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Fluff, and AU - Canon Divergence some of the most prominent. On the other side, "Freeform tags with most kudos" with words in orange. Rimming, Knotting, Possessive Behavior, and Getting Together most prominent.ALT

I speculate some about why these sets are so different in the article. I also share more graphs about the changes on the archive over the time I've been doing fandom stats.

5Hello! Thank you for all your hard work~ I was wondering if you were aware of any stats or papers about commenting trends? I always see writers talking about getting less feedback these days, and I wonder if it’s actually that people comment less, or if it is that there are more fandoms / writers / works spreading the fans who do comment thinner. Or if commenters used to be more likely to also be writers as well as readers and are now more likely to be one or the other. Thank you!04.8128-07-2026

7Hello! I keep hearing that fandom culture has changed, and there are less comments now than there were years ago. Have you noticed this in your analysis? Is the percentage of comments being left today lower than before?06.8628-07-2026

9Hi! You may have answered this already, sorry, but I was wondering if there was a way to get at least a rough estimate of the proportion of AO3 users that post fics? A sort of “the average AO3 user posts 0.3 fics, the average AO3 poster posts 1.5 fics” kind of thing. Or maybe there’s no way to get these stats at all! But thought I’d ask if you had any insight.
