A busy stretch of Boston paused Friday in somber remembrance.
Louisa Gag, a transportation planner for the city who advocated for safer streets and infrastructure to protect cyclists, was killed Thursday when a truck hit her bike in Mission Hill.
“She always wanted to share the gift of biking with everyone,” said city employee and cyclist Tony Baez.
“Louisa was a caring, loving person,” said District 5 Boston City Councilor Enrique Pepén.
“We’re all going to be grieving her for a really long time,” said District 8 Boston City Councilor Sharon Durkan.
The corner of Tremont and Parker now donned with flowers, keepsakes and letters honoring Gag.
“It was extremely emotional to know that a corridor that we know is unsafe, that someone was lost, and then later in the day, we found out that it was our very own Louisa,” said Durkan.
Gag’s home neighborhood of Roslindale was left in disbelief from her sudden and tragic death.
“There’s just a sense of hurt right now,” said Pepén, who represents and lives in Roslindale. “Trying to wrap our minds around what has happened.”
“This is just a devastating moment for Roslindale,” said Roslindale Village Main Street Executive Director Emma Blaxter. “No parent should have to experience this.”
While the moment centers on Gag’s memory, some are turning their attention to action.
“We have had multiple projects here in Mission Hill that have been paused,” said Baez.
Discussion surrounding stalled street safety projects is escalating, which advocates believe would prevent tragedies like this.
“Her legacy will endure in the work she advanced across the city and in the commitment of her colleagues, friends and fellow advocates to carry it forward,” Boston Mayor Michelle Wu wrote in a statement.
Baez, who works for the city, says the Wu administration is ultimately responsible for the paused projects.
“It’s clearly the mayor and her cabinet. It all started with a 30-day review last year, and one of the projects that would have potentially made some changes here was cited in that 30-day review,” said Baez.
Meanwhile, other city leaders agree action is needed to create safer conditions on Boston streets.
“We know that this corridor is unsafe, and we absolutely need action here,” said Durkan.
“Something that Louisa herself worked on was Vision Zero,” said Pepén. “I think we need to honor that.”
Roslindale Village Main Street tells NBC10 Boston a vigil is planned at 4 p.m. Sunday in Adams Park.
