Peculiar and playful people-powered machines will wow at a surreal showdown

Дата публикации: 20-05-2026 16:18:32

ENCOUNTERING ODD SIGHTS… while toodling around Humboldt County? Honestly, you might find fanciful figures while visiting any day of the week in any season. Still, Bigfoot encounters do festoon the fanciful local lore, and a host of wondrous critters might be marveled at during any redwoods stroll (yep, we’re talking to you, banana slugs). Still, if you’re legging it around Eureka or Arcata or Ferndale over Memorial Day Weekend, the cast of characters that may potentially cross your path is on the astounding, drop-the-jaw, “is that really for real” side. For that is when the Kinetic Grand Championship, the over-the-top, ever-outlandish, go-the-daffy-distance competition takes eye-catching place. Dubbed the “Triathlon of the Art World,” the people-powered party is synonymous with marvelous motor-less machines that roll and float over three rollicking days. Those days might include brief frustrations, vehicle breakdowns, quick structural fixes, and plenty of support from the spectators, but ho-hum, they are not.
MAY 23-25… are the 2026 dates, and the race, which covers over 50 miles in total, will begin at Arcata Plaza. That is a great opportunity to take in some of the on-the-move art sculptures during the judging and before the showdown starts, pieces that are true labors of love and testaments to their imaginative builders. Past years have seen a variety of vehicles on the move, with gargantuan shoes, oversized hippos, large lions, space saucers, and a swarm of big bees adding festive flavor to the scene. Day two will find the sculptures heading into the water near Samoa Bridge in Eureka, and this is a breath-holder for onlookers as they await to assess the floatability of each entrant. And finally, quaint Ferndale serves as the Victorian-flavored finish line on the final day, but not before other challenges are faced. Can’t make it? You can peruse the route and admire past pictures at the championship’s site, and support the colorful cause, an event that started in 1969, too.
