The man who was fatally shot in an incident involving federal immigration agents in Biddeford Monday was not the intended target of an arrest warrant, Sen. Angus King’s office said.

A spokesperson for King confirmed Monday afternoon that, hours after the senator held a press conference at the Portland International Jetport on the shooting, he was informed by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin that the “victim was not the target of the warrant.”

King had said earlier at the jetport press conference that Mullin had informed him that the man who was shot “was the target of (an) arrest warrant based upon his immigration status.”

Neighbors identified the victim as Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a 26-year-old man from Colombia. Immigrants rights activists said he was authorized to work in the United States. King spokesperson Matthew Felling said he was not able to confirm the name of the victim, who has not yet been identified by authorities.

Felling said later that as new information came to light, King wanted to share it with Maine.
