Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit has been unleashed at MagicCon Amsterdam 2026! Here’s everything fans need to know.
Wizards of the Coast had itself a weekend at MagicCon Amsterdam 2026, with a wealth of reveals going down the entire Magic: The Gathering release schedule on day one, and they saved the entire Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit reveals exclusively for day two. Each MagicCon brings together thousands of fans for a weekend-long celebration of the game, featuring exclusive reveals for the many fans attending MagicCon Amsterdam 2026 and the many at home. Today, we are focusing on the exclusive Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit reveals at MagicCon Amsterdam 2026.
For those who have been following along, Wizards of the Coast and MagicCon Amsterdam 2026 already blew the door wide open to the future, giving fans closer looks at Reality Fracture, a timeline of releases for 2027, and tearing the seal off of the Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek universes beyond set with exclusive set reprints, mechanics, and signed Captain Headliner cards in a preview event before MagicCon. Today at MagicCon Amsterdam 2026, WOTC popped the cork on Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit. Unlike many of the universes beyond sets before it (like Final Fantasy and Avatar: The Last Airbender), The Hobbit will be a smaller, more intimate set, matching the cozy book namesake it’s based on.
Unlike other universes beyond sets, The Hobbit hasn’t announced a bonus sheet filled with any reprints (more on that later), but they have introduced a few mighty mechanics (new and old) for fans to smash each other with. Of course, the typical fare like Menace, Lifelink, Kicker, Modality spells, and other triggered effects such as landfall are still included in the new set, as are new counter types like a Hone Counter for Sting, Bilbo’s Sword. The new Storied and Recruit abilities are detailed below.

Aside from the newly revealed mechanics, The Hobbit still had a wealth of new cards and treatments up its sleeve to present for the break between First and Second Breakfast. When The Hobbit was revealed, Wizards of the Coast also tore the lid off the headliner of the set, a gilded version of Smaug the Magnificent, which will be highly sought by collectors and fans alike and will only be available in Collector Booster packs. But today they revealed a wealth of new cards, starting with New Box Topper reprints (one will come with a full Booster Box purchase of the set) of which Tom Bombadil and Sauron, The Dark Lord were revealed at MagicCon Las Vegas 2026. The newly revealed card artwork reprints from the original Lord of the Rings set can be seen below, in their new artwork.
Like other universes beyond sets (looking at you, Final Fantasy and Marvel Super Heroes), Wizards of the Coast wanted to capture special scenes from the classic novel and print them on easel scene boxes to embody The Hobbit as it was told. Below are the two scene box reveals at MagicCon Amsterdam 2027, including a new Legendary Gandalf, Party Guest, that can finally allow fans to build an “oops! All Gandalf!” Commander Deck due to its Jeskai colourway. The Crack the Plates Scene Box is revealed below.
Another iconic scene, where Bilbo meets Smaug for the first time, is also detailed on a Scene Box in full art treatment. The Treasures of Smaug Scene Box cards are shown below.
Borderless, Dwarven language reprint cards were also shown off at MagicCon Las Vegas 2026, and more of them were revealed from the Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit set at MagicCon Amsterdam 2027. The cards can be seen below, with their proper names and new artwork befitting Middle-earth. One of these cards is the prized Mox Amber, a high-value treasure Smaug would absolutely not part with.
Arcane Signet
Mox Amber
Treasure Vault
The Reaver Cleaver
Dwarven Warriors
Last but not least, Wizards of the Coast showed off more of the specialized frames The Hobbit will receive when hitting tabletops in August. While these frames were also revealed before, the new artworks shown below were finally revealed at MagicCon Amsterdam 2026 today, and they can be seen below in Dragon Hoard and Book Cover full art treatments. Befitting of the novel, J.R.R. Tolkien is emblazoned on the front in honour of the legendary writer who crafted Middle-earth. Included are the rest of the cards revealed today, in their basic Magic: The Gathering frames.
