Today, Magic: The Gathering is giving us our first large look at Magic: The Gathering Star Trek, a new set that seeks to combine two major franchises. With cards referencing key characters and moments from across Star Trek's history, this set is going to be an incredibly popular one for new and old Star Trek fans alike. Alongside the reveals, an MTG Weekly video was also dropped with Gavin Verhey, Lead Designer for Magic The Gathering Star Trek, and Tom Jenkot, Principal Art Director.

Verhey revealed that this set, like many others of the large crossovers, has been in the works for years "but in a way I've been working on it for a very long time because I fell in love with Star Trek when I was about six or seven years old." Verhey shared a memory of watching Star Trek with his father, and mentioned The Inner Light as his favorite episode.

Jenkot also mentioned being an Original Series guy. "I'm super excited to have worked on the collectibility plan and special treatments [...], and I may have done too much."

Captains Kirk And Janeway In Magic: The Gathering

The first cards to be shown off were the cards for Captain James T. Kirk and Captain Kathryn Janeway. Kirk allows you to be doing something every turn, making decisions for the crew, but when you have no cards in your hand he can do more. This was created as a way to build a narrative about what Kirk is able to do when his back is up against the wall...

Magic the Gathering Star Trek Autograph Cards

Captain James T. Kirk (Red - 2/2)
Legendary Creature - Human Officer
Whenever Captain Kirk enters or attacks, choose one. If you have no cards in hand, choose one or more instead.
- Discard a card, then draw a card.
- DCreate a 1/1 red Officer creature token.
Creatures you control get +1/+0 until end of turn.

Janeway leans into discoverability by allowing you to play more lands, and also have creatures explore. The explore mechanic lets you reveal the top card of your library and put it into your hand if it's a land. If not then you put a +1/+1 counter on the creature that explored, and then put the card back onto the top of your deck or into your graveyard.

Captain Kathryn Janeway (Green - 2/3)
Legendary Creature - Human Officer
You may play an additional land on each of your turns.
Whenever Captain Janeway or another creature you control enters, that creature explores.

Each of these cards come with a unique art treatment. For Kirk it's the Classic Enterprise Cards, an art treatment that is inspired by classic sci-fi artwork. Janeway has a LCARS frame inspired by the Voyager LCARS user interface. Officer is also a new Creature type for the set.

For the first time in MTG history there will be cards with signatures from actors who played the characters. These cards don't have effect text on them but instead of new silver box with a place to be signed. Jenkot joked that Shatner "was an absolute pro" at signing the cards, interested in the game and how fans would be able to get their hands on the cards.

Magic the Gathering Star Trek Commander Decks

While two Autograph Cards were revealed today it was also teased that there would be five more autograph cards, that being said... they won't all be captains. While Verhey and Jenkot teased players that they should guess who the remaining five could be the added hint was that obviously the actors had to be alive so that they could sign the cards. My guess would be LeVar Burton as Geordi La Forge.

There will be a little over 200 of each of the Autograph Cards, so ~1,400+ in total.

Returning mechanics for Magic: The Gathering Star Trek is turning Spacecraft like the U.S.S Enterprise into a Station. To create situations where the players will make decisions, similarly to the decisions that Start Trek characters would have to make in the show, there are cards that will force players to make decisions like "Set Phasers to..." where you can either Stun or Kill a creature.

Magic the Gathering Star Trek Generations

In the artwork you'll see throughout the Magic: The Gathering Star Trek products you'll get to see references to every generation, major moments, as well as some sillier times aboard the Enterprise.

Throughout the Weekly MTG video, Verhey and Jenkot took us through a variety of Sagas, cards from outside the original Star Trek, and many, many more familiar moments from the history of Star Trek to celebrate its 60th Anniversary.

Magic: the Gathering Star Trek will release on November 20th, 2026, with a pre-release on November 13th, 2026.
