From India’s semiconductor push under ISM 2.0 and a suspected ransomware breach linked to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, to a ₹62,500 crore mobile manufacturing scheme and tighter OTT regulation, here are the key developments across technology, cybersecurity, manufacturing and policy.
Cabinet approves₹1.27 lakh crore for Semicon Mission 2.0
Let’s start with India’s semiconductor push. The Union Cabinet has approved the second edition of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM 2.0) with an outlay of ₹1.27 lakh crore, expanding support for the country’s chip manufacturing ambitions. The revamped programme will also incentivise suppliers of critical raw materials, including minerals and industrial gases, broadening the scope beyond chip fabrication to strengthen India’s semiconductor supply chain.
Files relating to Kudankulam nuclear power plant exposed in ransomware data breach
Next, a suspected ransomware breach has put sensitive information linked to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in the spotlight. A cybercriminal group claims to have leaked thousands of files, including alleged blueprints, supplier details and project records connected to contractor Reliance Infrastructure. Reliance says the breach was limited to a third-party hosted server and has informed the government, while CERT-In is investigating the incident. Although the authenticity of the leaked documents has not been verified, cybersecurity experts say such information could pose security risks if exploited by malicious actors.
Cabinet approves Rs 62,500 crore for Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme
Moving to electronics manufacturing, the Union Cabinet has approved a ₹62,500 crore Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme to boost domestic production, exports and Indian smartphone brands. The five-year scheme aims to generate ₹15 lakh crore in exports and create 60,000 direct jobs, while offering incentives for local manufacturing, domestic sourcing, and design-led R&D.
Govt considering amendment in IT Rules for OTT platforms, action against ZEE5
Turning to streaming regulation, the government is considering amending the IT Rules, 2021 to make CBFC certification mandatory for films released on OTT platforms. The move follows the controversy over Satluj, which was briefly streamed on ZEE5 before being taken down on government orders citing national security concerns. Officials are also considering action against the platform for releasing the film without certification.
