From tighter CAFE-III fuel efficiency norms recognising ethanol and bio-fuels, and a consumer court ruling against Maruti Suzuki over a defective hybrid SUV, to US tariff tensions over Brazil’s trade preferences and an updated Cost Inflation Index for FY2026-27, here are the key developments across auto policy, consumer rights, global trade and taxation.
Govt issues draft CAFE III norms; invites stakeholder suggestions
Let’s start with fuel efficiency norms. The Ministry of Power has released the draft CAFE-III norms, which will replace the existing CAFE-II standards from April 2027. The new rules tighten fuel efficiency targets and, for the first time, recognise the carbon-neutrality of ethanol, bio-fuels and compressed bio-gas. Feedback on the draft is open till August 6, 2026.
Consumer forum asks dealer to replace faulty car with E20-compliant model, orders ₹1 lakh payout
Next, a consumer court in Chhattisgarh has ruled against Maruti Suzuki and one of its dealers over a defective hybrid SUV. The commission directed the company to replace a Grand Vitara Strong Hybrid with an E20-compatible model, holding that a 16-month-old vehicle was sold to the customer and recurring engine issues were not resolved. Failing this, the company must refund ₹20.5 lakh within 45 days.
Moving to global trade, the United States has cited Brazil’s preferential tariff arrangements with India and Mexico while announcing a 25 per cent tariff on certain Brazilian imports. The USTR said Brazil grants tariff concessions to India and Mexico that are not extended to the US, and has sought similar market access for American exporters.
Govt raises cost inflation index for FY27 to 384, lowering long-term capital gains tax
Turning to capital gains taxation, the CBDT has notified the Cost Inflation Index at 384 for FY2026-27, up from 376 last year. While indexation benefits were largely withdrawn in 2024, the revised CII remains relevant for the sale of land and buildings acquired before July 23, 2024.
