Derby County were back in action again this afternoon as they faced the League One Brewers at the Pirelli Stadium as the warm-up to the new season continued
Burton Albion retained the Bass Charity Vase as they secured a 1-0 victory over Derby County at the Pirelli Stadium.
Burton took the lead after just 10 minutes when a shot from Tomas Kalinauskas was parried by Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.
When Oscar Fraulo tried to hook the rebound clear, he caught Tyrese Shade with his boot which led referee Ollie Yates to point to the spot.
Shade took responsibility for the kick himself and just managed to squeeze it past Zetterstrom, who, although getting his hand to it, couldn't keep it out.
Derby offered little going forward in the opening stages, not helped by a lack of pace, as Kalinauskas fired over the bar for the hosts before Jack Armer followed suit.
The best chance for the visitors came when Lewis Travis won a crunching challenge which led to Morris feeding Joe Ward who looked certain to score, but dragged his effort wide of the post.
After the break, Filip Bilbija had penalty appeals waved away after he appeared to be shoved by George Evans. Tempers then started to match the temperatures as a tackle from Max Johnston on Kalinauskas left the Burton man in a heap before Lewis Travis appeared to catch him while he was on the floor.
That sparked a coming together of both sets of players and once the game resumed, Bobby Clark was then subjected to a dreadful tackle that again caused another melee.
Once play got back under way, Dion Sanderson then almost hauled them level when his shot was beaten away by Corey Addai. At the other end, Kyran Lofthouse went close after a powerful run from midfield.
Millar Matthews-Lewis also went close as the Brewers sealed the win. There was a penalty shoot out after the game, which Burton won 4-3.
Jacob Widell Zetterstrom: Faced a couple of shots that he parried, although he was very close to stopping the penalty, but despite getting a hand to it, just couldn't stop it from going over the line.
Max Johnston: Didn't see much of him as an attacking threat in the first half as Derby struggled to get their attack going not helped by an inability to retain the ball.
Dion Sanderson: Played in the heart of the defence after Sondre Langas played against Mansfield last night. A steady performance alongside Matt Clarke.
Matt Clarke: The reigning player of the season made one excellent block in the first half and got stuck into the challenges. Will be a hugely important figure again.
Craig Forsyth: With Derry Murkin still recovering from minor back surgery, Forsyth was handed the left-back spot and did the job with the minimum of fuss.
Oscar Fraulo: Still looks like he is getting to grips with the physicality of English football. Gave away the penalty with an attempted clearance which was just mistimed.
Lewis Travis: This is a big season for the captain who knows he has to deliver more than he did last term. Tried to light Derby's fire by smashing into a couple of challenges throughout the first half.
Bobby Clark: Derby's lack of wide options meant he was put on the left-hand side and he's just not a winger. He can play there, but don't think anybody would dispute that being central suits him more. Had one shot blocked.
Filip Bilbija: Showed some neat touches in the opening two minutes, but couldn't quite get into the game. Certainly looks comfortable on the ball but physically, the Championship could be an eye-opener for him.
Joe Ward: The former Peterborough winger should have hauled Derby level before half-time when Derby created their best chance of the first half.
Carlton Morris: Derby gave him plenty of fight-balls but chances were few and far between for the ex-Luton forward in the first half with one he did have flying over the bar.
Subs
Sam Szmodics (Bilbija 60): Had a few touches when he came on.
Richard O'Donnell (Zetterstrom 71): Didn't have a shot to save.
