Burton Albion retained the Bass Charity Vase as they secured a 1-0 victory over Derby County at the Pirelli Stadium.

Burton took the lead after just 10 minutes when a shot from Tomas Kalinauskas was parried by Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.

When Oscar Fraulo tried to hook the rebound clear, he caught Tyrese Shade with his boot which led referee Ollie Yates to point to the spot.

Shade took responsibility for the kick himself and just managed to squeeze it past Zetterstrom, who, although getting his hand to it, couldn't keep it out.

Derby offered little going forward in the opening stages, not helped by a lack of pace, as Kalinauskas fired over the bar for the hosts before Jack Armer followed suit.

The best chance for the visitors came when Lewis Travis won a crunching challenge which led to Morris feeding Joe Ward who looked certain to score, but dragged his effort wide of the post.

After the break, Filip Bilbija had penalty appeals waved away after he appeared to be shoved by George Evans. Tempers then started to match the temperatures as a tackle from Max Johnston on Kalinauskas left the Burton man in a heap before Lewis Travis appeared to catch him while he was on the floor.

That sparked a coming together of both sets of players and once the game resumed, Bobby Clark was then subjected to a dreadful tackle that again caused another melee.

Once play got back under way, Dion Sanderson then almost hauled them level when his shot was beaten away by Corey Addai. At the other end, Kyran Lofthouse went close after a powerful run from midfield.

Millar Matthews-Lewis also went close as the Brewers sealed the win. There was a penalty shoot out after the game, which Burton won 4-3.Player verdicts

And Derby have yet to find an equaliser. Addai's only had a couple of shots to save, the best being from Sanderson.

But at the moment, I don't see where the goal is going to come from.

A Burton trialist absolutely smashes Bobby Clark and that sparks another melee. Terrible challenge and now the referee is talking to Morris and Dennis.

There was plenty of shoving and pushing. And it seems to have livened up the fans. Was a dreadful tackle.

Johnston thunders into a challenge on Kalinauskas who is on the deck. Travis then comes over and gets involved and appears to catch him while on the floor.

Finn Delap comes racing over and grabs the Derby skipper and that sparks a melee as players start grabbing each other.

John Eustace is trying to act as peacemaker. But the Burton bench aren't happy.

We are back under way and Bilbija has had a penalty appeal turned down after a challenge from Evans.

There was a coming together, but not enough to convince Ollie Yates. Derby fans behind the goal are not happy.

Burton lead and all I can really say is that is that it's a good job there's nothing riding on this game.

Travis wins a thumping challenge and Derby come away with the ball through Johnston who drives a pass into the feet of Ward whose cross is turned behind for a corner.

The ball is whipped into the box, but Burton clear.

Derby create their first chance and it's from a ball over the top from Clark which picks out the run of Morris.

The striker enters the box and while he has support, he uses it as a decoy to cut inside and shoot.

His effort hits a defender and comes back to him but he smashes over the bar.

Kalinauskas takes a shot from the edge of the box which Zetterstrom parries away. As the ball ricochets into the area, Fraulo catches Shade with his foot and the ref blows for the penalty.

Shade takes responsibility and while Zetterstrom gets a hand to it, he can't keep it out.

First touch from Bilbija and it's a good one. Plays a couple of neat passes around the corner. Lovely link-up, but the move breaks down as Clark can't keep the ball in play.

But encouraging first signs.

Keen to see Bilbija and how he gets on.

Derby County have completed the signing of Sam Szmodics from Ipswich Town as he became their fourth signing of the summer.

The attacker has returned to Pride Park on a season-long loan deal with an obligation to buy as the formalities of the move were completed. It is understood the obligation to buy is around £2.7m which is based on appearances.

Head coach John Eustace had been eager for Szmodics to return to Derby after he spent the second half of last season on loan from Portman Road, scoring three goals in 13 appearances.

The forward could be given a run out this weekend as Derby face Burton Albion on Saturday.

After Ipswich returned to the Premier League, Szmodics has been deemed surplus to requirements although he does have two years remaining on his deal.

A loan move looks a good piece of business as Derby hope that Eustace and Szmodics can rekindle the partnership that saw the latter score more than 30 goals under the Rams chief when they were at Blackburn together.
