[PODCAST] The Smoking Tire's Matt Farah Reviews the 2027 Corvette Grand Sport

Matt Farah of The Smoking Tire Podcast and a contributor to Road & Track has recently had the opportunity to test drive the 2027 Corvette Grand Sport. It’s one of the best reviews yet for enthusiasts as Matt directly addresses some key points in the emerging Grand Sport vs Z06 debate.

The test drive happened in Idaho and the terrain allows him to explore a new theory: “You find good roads near damns,” and so he took the new 2027 Corvette Grand Sport on a damn tour for an upcoming Road & Track article. With the embargo ending on July 28th, he was free to discuss his driving impressions of the Grand Sport and more on his podcast.

His review covers the new engine which he calls great and “sounds angrier…It is a big, beefy fing V8.” He praises the Corvette’s aluminum structure which he said felt more rigid than a Ferrari 849 Tessa Spider which he has just driven immediately before the Grand Sport. He calls the interior as having one of the most user friendly interfaces and describes how CarPlay just connects instantly, every time.

The discussion turns to comparing the Grand Sport to the Z06 which Matt has driven previously. He says it’s clear how the Z06’s 670-hp LT6 makes its power differently than the Grand Sport’s 535-hp LS6:

Grand Sport: 535 hp @ 6100 rpm, 520 lb‑ft @ 6200 rpm, 6500 rpm redline
Z06: 670 hp, 460 lb‑ft @ 6300 rpm, 8600 rpm redline

“As soon as the Grand Sport’s big‑block motor gives up, that’s when the Z06 just gets going. There’s no overlap in powerband. The peak torque and peak horsepower of these two cars don’t overlap. The Z06 redline is 8,600 rpm — you’ve got 2,300 rpm of revs. That’s fun. The big‑block engines are amazing, but the redline is low, though the torque spread is huge.”

After discussion on prices of the car he drove which had an MSRP of $144,000, he had this to say:

“If your budget is around $110–120k, you’re legitimately choosing which engine you want, because you’ve got the same chassis, same everything else, even the same rear bumper. You’ve got a lot of choices in the middle. It’s like 911s — the temptation is GT3, but in the real world, a turbocharged 911 will be quicker. My suspicion is that in the real world, up on the mountain, for most people who aren’t comfortable zinging their car to redline constantly, the Grand Sport will feel like a much quicker car than the Z06 most of the time.

Matt also points out that it’s worth upgrading to the Center Quad Exhaust which adds $1,995. He says, “If you want a Corvette that sounds like America — a muscle‑car thing — this, with the center exhaust, sounds more exotic than most Corvettes.

There’s a lot more on the Grand Sport and C8s in general so give it a watch. The Corvette Grand Sport segment starts at 20:00 but leading into that, they discuss Flock cameras and the recent controversy where an automotive reviewer from TheDrive got surrounded by cops during a test drive.
