Rashid Khan reaches 700th T20 wicket in unusual fashionAfghanistan captain Rashid Khan recorded his 700th wicket in T20 cricket when United Arab Emirates batter Muhammad Arfan was dismissed hit wicket during the 15th over. Arfan attempted a reverse-sweep off Rashid and inadvertently dislodged the bails with his bat, making it the first time the leg-spinner has gained a dismissal in this manner.
The landmark combined Rashid’s 191 T20 international wickets with his 509 victims in domestic T20 competitions to take him to 700 career wickets in the format. It was a singular occurrence in the 11,794 deliveries Rashid has bowled in T20s up to that point.
Rashid finished with figures of 1-24 from his four overs. Team-mate Azmatullah Omarzai was the most successful bowler for Afghanistan, returning 4-15 as UAE were limited to 160-9.
How the UAE innings unfoldedAfghanistan lost Rahmanullah Gurbaz early for a duck, but Ibrahim Zadran’s composed half-century (53) steadied the reply. UAE’s Muhammad Arfan claimed 2-30, attempting to slow the chase.
Azmatullah Omarzai provided the finishing touch with an unbeaten 40 from 21 balls, guiding Afghanistan to 162-5 with four balls to spare and securing their first points in Group D.
Group implications and remaining scenariosBoth Afghanistan and the UAE now have two points in Group D. Afghanistan must defeat New Zealand in their final group match and overhaul the Black Caps’ and UAE’s net run-rate to move ahead. The UAE, meanwhile, need a win over South Africa and an improved net run-rate that surpasses both New Zealand and Afghanistan to keep their tournament hopes alive.
