AI is rapidly changing everything. It was around 2023 that AI became accessible to the general public. Now that the hype has faded, companies realize that if they don’t invest in AI, they’ll lose a major competitive advantage. It means we will see significant changes in the structure of the Scrum organizations and the way Scrum Teams work. My forecast for the changes in two years is: 1- AI Team members: AI can do a lot of repetitive work 24/7 with significantly lower cost compared to humans. So, we will see AI Team members, and naturally, the number of humans in the Scrum Team will decrease. 2- Focus shift: The focus of the team will move from building the product to verifying if they are delivering real value to customers. Building the product will no longer be the bottleneck. 3- Less need for facilitation: As the number of humans in the Scrum Team will decrease, naturally, the need for facilitation will decline as well. So, there will be less demand for one of the services that Scrum Masters deliver. 4- AI Orchestration is the new service for Scrum Masters: As the team structure will be a combination of humans and AI Agents, Scrum Masters are supposed to devise, choose, setup, and orchestrate the process of leveraging AI team members. It is a new skill for Scrum Masters that they should invest in learning. 5- AI effect on the organizations: As AI is going to be the main part of the new norm of the way we work, organizations need AI Transformation. For this case, Scrum Masters have a crucial role, as they already have a Change Agent stance. But to effectively serve their organizations, they need to learn how to lead, guide, and coach the organization as an AI Coach. 6- You will be expected to work with more teams: The current norm is that companies expect a Scrum Master to work with 2 teams on average simultaneously. With having AI-empowered Scrum Teams, one Scrum Master can handle 3 teams easily or even more. So, when layoffs come, the math is brutal: Cost-per-team will be the deciding factor. You become a luxury the business can no longer afford if you don’t put new value on the table. 7- Much less demand for classic Scrum Masters: As many things will change with the effect of AI, we will see a serious demand decline for the classic Scrum Masters. ConclusionThe reality is that the Scrum way of working is changing dramatically with the effect of AI. So, if you don’t prepare yourself for the near future, very, very easily you will become irrelevant, and no one will want your service. The only way to secure yourself is to adapt to the new norm. I believe we will see a new generation of Scrum Teams named AI-native Scrum Teams. They don’t simply use AI tools, but they incorporate AI capabilities into how they plan, build, deliver, collaborate, and learn while still preserving Scrum's core principles. The key question isn't "Will AI replace Scrum Masters?" It's more likely, "Will organizations choose Scrum Masters who know how to leverage AI over those who don't?" In many workplaces, the answer is increasingly yes. I myself started learning AI in early 2024. Since then, I have been intensively working to learn how AI can make the Scrum way of working better. Every day, I am learning something new, but there is still a lot that I should learn about AI and keep myself up to date. So, imagine the long distance you have in front of you if you make a decision to start your AI journey even today. Tip: Have you already thought about your way of how you want to prepare yourself for the near future?! It is a serious question. Don’t postpone it. Think about it and take action right now. Not tomorrow.
