Heavy Mumbai rains: Three dead, four injured as rain disrupts life in Maharashtra

Three people were killed, and four others were injured as torrential rain lashed Maharashtra on Sunday (July 5, 2026), affecting normal life across Mumbai, Thane and several other districts.

Flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were affected for about an hour due to heavy rain and strong winds.

IMD issues red alert for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad; urges people to avoid non-essential travel

In view of the IMD’s rain alert for Monday (July 6, 2026), authorities have declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai and Thane.

Several rain-related incidents were reported from different parts of the State. Yunus Kundawala, 63, died after a tree fell on him in Mumbai. The death took the monsoon-related toll in the city to three over the past week. 

A teenager drowned in a swollen river at Thane. The Maharashtra Disaster Management Authority said that one person was killed and four others were injured in Satara in rain-related incidents.

In Raigad district, which was on a red alert, over 12 tourists were safely rescued from Adoshi waterfall near Khopoli with the help of the local police after the water level rose sharply following heavy rain. A massive landslide on the road leading to Rajmachi Fort completely blocked vehicular movement in Lonavala. Earth movers were deployed to clear the debris, police said.

IMD issues red alert for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad; urges people to avoid non-essential travel

In Mumbai, heavy spells of rain caused multiple trees to fall across the western suburbs, blocking several key roads. 

Mumbai city recorded 265.6 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 4 p.m. on Sunday (July 5, 2026), the highest in the State for the day. It was followed by Mumbai suburbs, which received 227.7 mm. The city was on a red alert on Sunday (July 5, 2026). The Thane Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) received 93 complaints during the last 24 hours, including 24 instances of tree falls, 22 cases of fallen branches, 24 instances of waterlogging, eight compound wall collapses, and one landslide.

Several low-lying areas in Thane city, Kalyan, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, Dombivli, and Navi Mumbai were flooded as water entered homes in many of these areas.

The administration has issued a warning asking people to stay indoors in districts which are on orange and red alert on Monday (July 6, 2026).
