umbai weather today, Mumbai rains highlights: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a ‘red’ alert for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds and appealed to people to avoid unnecessary travel.
The MeT office upgraded the warning from ‘orange’ to ‘red’ alert in the morning after observing changes in weather conditions. It also predicted occasional strong winds gusting up to 70-80 kmph over the region.
The neighbouring Palghar district has been placed under an ‘orange’ alert, with a forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and occasional strong winds of 70-80 kmph.
Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan said Mumbai and neighbouring Palghar and Raigad districts have witnessed a record-breaking rainfall, and 13 persons were killed in rain-related incidents in the last three to four days.
The rains have also caused widespread waterlogging, rail and road traffic disruption and the uprooting of hundreds of trees.
According to a railway spokesperson, several rail services in the Mumbai Central division have been affected due to inundated tracks.
A spokesperson of North Western Railway said that train number 22915 (Bandra Terminus-Hisar) will remain cancelled on July 6, while train number 22916 (Hisar-Bandra Terminus) will remain cancelled on July 7.
Similarly, train number 22933 (Bandra Terminus-Jaipur) will remain cancelled on July 6 and train number 22934 (Jaipur-Bandra Terminus) on July 7.

Heavy rain and severe waterlogging paralysed Western Railway operations on Monday, leaving more than 20 long-distance trains stranded across various stations in Mumbai and south Gujarat, as tracks remained submerged.
As more than 40 train services were affected by cancellations, diversions, and delays, railway authorities scrambled to assist stranded passengers and worked to restore connectivity on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad trunk route.
According to Western Railway officials, train services were severely hampered by waterlogging, particularly between the Vasai Road-Virar and Saphale-Palghar sections.
As of 1.50 pm, at least 22 long-distance trains were being regulated at various stations, including Virar, Vangaon, Palghar, Dahanu Road, and Valsad, they said.
Throughout the day, more than 40 services were impacted, with at least eight trains rescheduled, 10 cancelled, and several others diverted or short-terminated due to heavy rain, waterlogging and a landslide, a WR spokesperson said.
Railway officials said that parts of Maharashtra’s Palghar district recorded almost 300 mm of rainfall in just two hours, worsening the situation by 9 am. (PTI)
The Pune district administration on Monday urged Warkaris and devotees to avoid entering Alandi, as the overflowing Indrayani River has submerged all four bridges leading into the temple town ahead of the upcoming palakhi procession of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj.
The IMD has issued a ‘red alert’ for Pune on Monday, warning of heavy rains in the district.
With thousands of pilgrims expected to reach the town for the July 8 procession, officials have declared the town inaccessible and issued an urgent appeal for those already en route to halt their journeys to ensure their safety amid the flooding.
“All four bridges over the Indrayani River providing access to Alandi have submerged due to flooding. It is not safe to travel to the town at present,” the administration stated in a release.

One person has died during the landslide incident that occurred on Monday in the Patal village of Maval Tensil of Pune district. Two more persons are feared trapped beneath the debris.
Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) Local Administration and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are currently carrying out the search and rescue operation in the region.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday directed developers and contractors to suspend hazardous construction activities and ensure strict safety measures at all project sites, following a ‘red’ alert for extremely heavy rains and strong winds.
Compliance with the advisory is mandatory, the BMC said, stressing that the safety of workers, neighbouring residents and the general public is of paramount importance.
In an advisory issued to developers, architects, licensed surveyors, contractors, project managers and site engineers, the civic body asked them to inspect scaffolding, tower cranes, material hoists, safety nets, formwork, tin sheets and other temporary structures to ensure they are stable and securely fastened.
The BMC directed that loose materials on upper floors, terraces and elevated platforms be removed or firmly secured to prevent accidents during strong winds.
Lifting operations and work at heights should be suspended wherever weather conditions pose a risk, while exclusion zones must be maintained below active work areas, it said. (PTI)
Heavy rainfall battering Mumbai, Pune, and Goa has disrupted air travel, with Akasa Air warning that flights across its network may face delays. The airline has acknowledged the resulting inconvenience to passengers’ travel plans and has requested patience, noting that while the situation is beyond its control, its teams remain ready to assist travellers.
Three members of a family were feared trapped after their house was buried in a landslide in Maharashtra’s Pune district in the early hours of Monday, police said.
The incident occurred at Patan village in Maval tehsil, they said, adding that a rescue operation was underway.
“Due to heavy rainfall, three landslides occurred in a remote village in Maval. In one of the incidents, a house was buried under the debris. Congress Legislature Party leader in the Maharashtra assembly, Vijay Wadettiwar, on Monday alleged that the recent rain-related deaths in Mumbai reflected the failure of the state government and civic administration to protect people.
Referring to the collapse of a chawl (row tenement) in Mankhurd on Sunday that claimed six lives, Wadettiwar said it was not an isolated accident but the result of negligence in dealing with old and dangerous structures.
The government must explain whether the building had been declared unsafe and, if so, why residents were not shifted to a safer place, he said in a statement.
Ten persons lost their lives in Mumbai in the last six days in rain-related incidents, including deaths caused by a house collapse, falling trees and open manholes, the Congress leader noted.
People should not have to pay with their lives because of administrative lapses, he said. (PTI)
Heavy rainfall in Maharashtra’s Raigad district led to severe waterlogging on the busy Mumbai-Goa highway, bringing traffic to a standstill for a few hours and leaving thousands of commuters stranded, officials said on Monday.
Floodwater accumulated on the highway at Sukeli Ghat near Nagothane, where water levels rose to nearly three feet, preventing the movement of vehicles on Sunday.
The inundation led to long queues of vehicles, stretching 8 to 10 km on both sides of the highway on Sunday. Traffic movement started on Monday, but was slow as continuous rainfall since Saturday night triggered a flood-like situation on the Nagothane-Wakan stretch.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a ‘red’ alert for Raigad district for the next two days as heavy rainfall is expected to continue. (PTI)
The water accumulated near the Pune Expressway and the debris that fell on the road due to landslides have been completely removed, after which the road has been opened again for vehicular traffic, traffic police said.
Earlier, the Pune traffic authority stated that all the roads going from Pune to Mumbai have been closed due to landslides and waterlogging in various areas because of relentless rains since the last 48 hours.
A landslide occurred at Tunnel No. 40 (BB EMD) on the Mumbai-Pune railway route. The Railway authorities have been carrying out the debris removal work on a war footing, and efforts are underway to restore the route.
Pune Traffic Police appealed to the people to avoid travelling towards Mumbai through the old Mumbai-Pune Highway as well as the Expressway. (PTI)

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) on Monday advised private offices in Mumbai to allow employees to work from home and announced a half-day for non-essential and semi-government offices in view of the heavy rains, officials said.
The advisory came after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red’ alert for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds with speeds of 80-90 kmph in the state capital and neighbouring Thane and Raigad districts.
According to the advisory issued by the SDMA on X, private establishments have been asked to permit employees to work from home wherever feasible, while employees of government and semi-government offices, except those engaged in essential services, have been granted a half-day after noon.
Authorities also urged people to avoid unnecessary travel, remain indoors unless essential, and follow official advisories as heavy rain continued to affect normal life in Mumbai and adjoining areas. (PTI)

New dates for the exams will be announced soon.
This comes as the city has been battered by incessant rains and waterlogged areas in the last few days.
The university emphasised that the decision was taken while keeping the students’ safety in mind.
The helpline numbers are: CSMT (022-22694040), Thane (9321336747), Lonavala (8356854238) and Dadar (9136452387). Passengers have been requested to use these numbers for real-time updates and travel-related information.
Train services on the busy Mumbai-Pune route were suspended early Monday after heavy rains triggered landslides in the Karjat-Lonavala Bhor Ghat section, officials said.
A landslide occurred near Thakurwadi in the ghat section, Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, told PTI. Another landslide was reported on the middle line between Khandala and Monkey Hill at around 3.05 am, he added.
Due to the landslides, all the three railway lines have been affected, forcing Central Railway to cancel, divert and regulate several long-distance trains, Nila said.
The Mumbai–Pune railway route has three tracks in the difficult Bhor Ghat section (Khandala Ghat): the Up line (towards Mumbai), Down line (towards Pune), and a Middle line.
The disruptions led to the cancellation of several trains, including the CSMT-Pune Indrayani Express, Intercity Express, Deccan Express, Deccan Queen, Pragati Express and Dhule Express.
Additional services, including the Pune-CSMT Sinhagad Express and other trains, were also cancelled, while several long-distance trains were diverted, short-terminated, short-originated or rescheduled, officials said. (PTI)
Intermittent heavy rain and gusty winds disrupted daily life in Mumbai and neighbouring districts on Monday, suspending long-distance trains to Pune, halting suburban services on a section in Raigad, and slowing road traffic due to waterlogging.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more downpours during the day.
Authorities advised commuters to exercise caution and check the latest traffic and train updates before travelling in view of the heavy rainfall prediction.
Train services on the busy Mumbai-Pune route were suspended early Monday after heavy rains triggered landslides in the Karjat-Lonavala Bhor Ghat section, officials said.
The Central Railway also suspended local train services between Karjat and Khopoli in neighbouring Raigad district after heavy rain washed away the ballast (gravel bed supporting the tracks) between Lowjee and Dolavli stations, they said. (PTI)
