Recently, I have heard some people ask why State Rep. Michele Reneau doesn't always vote the way party leaders, lobbyists or even other Republicans expect. The answer is simple: she is a principled conservative who reads every bill, studies the fine print and weighs long-term consequences over short-term politics. Three votes from her time representing House District 27 make that clear.

When the Tennessee legislature took up a mid-decade congressional redistricting plan, Reneau didn't cast a "yes." She voted present.

A decision she later explained publicly, citing "serious concerns about the timing, process and unintended consequences" of redrawing maps outside the normal once-a-decade cycle tied to the census. For decades, Tennessee law reserved congressional map-drawing for after each census. Reneau's concern was straightforward: if the legislature redraws districts mid-decade once, it invites future legislatures, regardless of party, to do the same whenever political power shifts. That's a legislator following the law as written, not the pressure in the room or the heat of the moment.

On small business, Reneau's record speaks for itself. The NFIB's 2025-2026 Tennessee Voting Record, which tracked key House and Senate votes on regulatory, labor and tax issues important to entrepreneurs, shows Reneau voting with the small-business position on every bill, earning her a 100 percent score. That record isn't abstract. Furthermore, Reneau sponsored House Bill 130, the expansion of Tennessee's Food Freedom Act, which cut the cost and red tape of commercial licensing while allowing home cooks and small farmers to sell products directly to members of their community. This may sound simple to some, but for an entrepreneur trying to turn a kitchen skill into extra income for their families, or a farmer looking to lower costs by removing middle-men, that's opportunity.

Reneau also broke from the crowd on the Farmland Preservation Act, which created a $25 million state fund to pay farmers for permanent conservation easements administered by the Department of Agriculture. She supports preserving Tennessee farmland, but she simply doesn't believe the state should encourage families to permanently sign away development rights to third-party easement holders in exchange for a one-time payment. As it turns out, she was not alone in that concern. The bill's path through the legislature was contentious enough that a committee chairman was removed for opposing it, and another legislator warned on the House floor that the program could be a handcuff for future generations. Property-rights advocates have spent decades warning that conservation easements, once signed, bind not just the current landowner but every generation after them. Michele's answer isn't to abandon farmland preservation, instead, she favors tools like voluntary deed restrictions that protect land without permanently stripping a family's control over it for generations to come.

These are all very different issues, but the one constant has been Michele Reneau’s thorough, thoughtful, and conservative approach to policy decisions. Michele protects constitutional process, defends private property and backs entrepreneurs, and she does it by asking whether a bill holds up ten or twenty years from now, not whether it plays well in this week's headlines. She's not chasing the approval of party bosses or special interests, and she's not shaping her votes around her own re-election. She's voting the way she believes will serve Hamilton County and Tennessee families long after this campaign season is over, even when that means taking the harder, less popular vote.
