Newcastle United's summer transfer business represents a 'great chance' for Eddie Howe to have a 'refresh' at St James' Park that is sorely needed.

That is the view of Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony, who feels that everybody should stop 'getting their knickers in a twist' over the club's radical new transfer direction.

This summer has seen the experienced Kieran Trippier leave the club on a free transfer, while the sales of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur have brought in £169million.

In their place, Newcastle have signed four players all aged 20 and under, with goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen joining from Stade Reims, winger Bazoumana Toure joining from Hoffenheim and midfielders Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba joining from Ajax and Monaco respectively.

It is a brave new transfer direction but one the hierarchy felt was needed to bring in, young players from outside of the Premier League who represent higher value and can allow them to get ahead of the stringent financial rules limiting their spending.

It is led to accusations of Newcastle becoming a stepping stone club and fears big players like Bruno Guimaraes could be put off by the direction of the project.

But MacAnthony disagrees, suggesting the likes of Bournemouth and Brighton have shown good recruitment can solve all problems.

"Everybody is getting their knickers in a twist over what is happening at Newcastle," MacAnthony told talkSPORT. "You are saying Eddie Howe is frustrated.

"Liverpool miss out on signings, Man United lose out on signings every day. Tottenham beat you to signings this summer and they are one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"There was no pull-out there, they got beaten by Tottenham. So here is the truth and here is the reality. Bournemouth lost their whole backline last year.

"They lost a lot of talent in their team and I am not trying to say one is the same as the other. But recruitment won. If you have got great recruitment as Bournemouth showed, and Bournemouth nearly crashed the Champions League after losing their whole backline, going 20 games unbeaten and nearly hitting the Champions League.

"Brighton have showed it as well. Good recruitment solves all problems. I can hear my fans screaming: 'We're going to ring in about Peterborough's recruitment'!

"But what I am saying to you is I think it is a great chance for Eddie to have a refresh. I think it needs a refresh."
